What Gear Do You Need for a 5K or 10K?

You signed up for your first 5K or 10K. Congratulations! And you've been training your bud off. Congratulations for that too! Now what gear will you need to make your race day as successful as you have dreamed? Follow this check-list to make race day as smooth as possible:

Shoes & Apparel

  • Racing shoes
  • Orthotic inserts
  • Weather appropriate running tank/top/jacket, shorts, and/or tights
  • Sports bra
  • Running socks
  • Hat/visor/sunglasses

Safety and Recovery

  • BodyGlide (to prevent blisters)
  • Reflective gear (for a night/dusk race)
  • Foam roller/massage stick (promote muscle flexibilty pre-race, release tightness and increase bloodflow post-race)
  • Compression socks/sleeves (to increase energy, stamina, and performance)


  • Watch with timer or interval settings
  • Armband or belt for phone
  • Headphones (if allowed by the race)

Hydration & Nutrition

  • Water bottle/belt
  • Electrolyte drink
  • 1 or 2 gels, chews, or energy bars
